Everyday practices in Greece in the shadow of property – Καθημερινές πρακτικές στην Ελλάδα στη σκιά της ιδιοκτησίας

Abstract:

Collective cultivations, kitchen collectives, social kitchens, artistic collectives, self-education projects require, apart from human effort and materials, a space where they can be realised. Whether in open or in built space, those initiatives, formed in most cases through grassroots practices and movements, create a relationship with urban space which is not deployed along the public-private axis, much less through the institutional and social construction of private property over land.

Therefore, the paper explores the social arrangements by which those grassroots collective production and sharing are situated and performed in the city space; whether these arrangements challenge or break through the estalblished private property rights; and how those same initiative re-negotiate or even subvert the order of the city.

The theoretical approaches are emerging from the feminist critique on private property but also from analytical approaches of the Jungian school. The two grassroots case studies refer to urban initiatives which emerged the last four years in Greece while the third one is a case study to show the position and arguments of the other side, i.e. the policy of privatising public space.
